Silhouette Photographs

Silhouette photographs can be very be very captivating and also can be very creative. A silhouette is basically your subject placed infront of something that is emitting a lot of light towards the subject and then to the camera. See example!

That is your most basic silhouette lighting set up. You can change the light source from a studio strobe to a bright window, the sun and so on. For your exposure, you basically want to expose for your background (light source)which means your background light needs to be significantly brighter then your subject because you want to your subject to be more or less black agaisnt your perfectly exposed background. Here is an example!

CCAA Womans National Basketball Championships

I'm at my school Niagara College in Welland Ontario where the 2011 CCAA Womans National Basketball Championship is being held. They are on their final day and it is my first day covering the event. I have been here shooting since one oclock this afternoon starting with Dawson College Blues vs Capilano University Blues. It was a pretty good game with lots of competition.

After that Niagara College was up agaisnt MSVU(Mount Saint Vincent University). It was quite the match, both teams were giving it their all but in the end MSVU came out on top.

Now the bronze medal game is about to start so here we go!

Another new shot.

This photograph was taken using two Elinchrome strobes with large soft boxes attached. They were placed more or less above camera pointing down towards the model, who also had a white reflector filling the shadows from the high light source.

First day back at school.

Tis Monday and once again I am up at 8:15 drinking tea and eating some toast. What a morning, although the best part of it all is waking up ten minutes before your alarm.

Day 3

Our third day in New York was pretty awesome! It started off with a trip to Rick Beckers photographer studio. He is a professional photographer with a working studio in the heart of Manhattan. I really enjoyed this visit because I got a lot of information on how he got where he is and how everything works. His studio wasn't what I expected it to be, it was better! It was so organic and had everything and anything you could need to accompany your main subject in a shoot, there were windows, doors different flatboards and chairs hanging from the roof. It was everything he has accumulated over his years shooting commercial in NYC.

Here is his website link! http://rickbeckerstudios.com/

After the visit to the studio we went down to Ground Zero. It was really weird being there, I think we all kind of got the same feeling there. We also saw the memorial for the firefighters that were killed. The whole place was closed off and people were doing construction, the concept drawings for the new area looks really nice.

We got back on the bus and headed back to the area where the studio was, SoHo. We had time for lunch and to do a little shopping. I got a couple shirts and some pants nothing special ha wasn't in the mood for shopping! I mainly just did a lot of street photography of the people of NYC!

After that we ended up going to the Empire State Building. It was crazy! The view was amazing and the sunset was perfect! I couldn't have asked for anything else. After that we went back to the hotel where we did some last minute shopping and such then all of us hung out at the hotel! :D

Day Two

Day two wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be, but I guess its not like were in Paris ;) Also me and the others are very tired from the last two days and the walk through Central Park wasn't exactly lovely. It reminded me of my backyard back home but with huge buildings in the background. After that we went back to the hotel and had free time for basically the whole day. I was chilling with some girls and they wanted to shop so I went with them, gar girls and shopping, not the best thing! :D

We had the option to go out on a farrie to Staten Island. The only thing, we didn't know that that the boat wasn't going to stop on the Island. Me and my roomates thought about going but we decided that we would stay because we were extremely tired! We all relaxed and went for dinner and just had a nice night in NYC.

Once everyone else got back from the Staten Island Farrie ride I looked on Facebook and saw all these statuses popping up saying "Regretting the Staten Island trip." So I was happy we stayed and got to relax.

That is more or less how the day went, it wasn't much but it was enjoyable and had its very memorable times :)

First Day In NYC

Waking up at four o'clock in the morning to shower and then make pancakes and bacon for my friends seemed like a fun time but I was sure that I would feel it later on in the day. We started off by meeting at the school, six thirty, where we signed a waver and headed on to the bus, everyone was zombie-like.

After a couple stops, Anchorman, Big Daddy and nine hours of driving we arrived at our Hotel in Manhattan, Hotel At Times Square. It is about two or three blocks down from the bright Times Square. Right when we got off the bus you could feel the city, it was crazy! After settling in we all met outside the hotel on the busy NYC street and then proceeded to go about our "guided" walking tour of the Island.

The walk was absolutely fantastic! I couldn't believe the amount of lights and the crazy amount of people. The closer we got to Times Square the louder and brighter things got, and by the time we got there it was relatively dark out. We got a little lost from our group but ended up finding them. We were all snapping away trying to get the best images we could get, although we knew we'd be back in the same spot later on. We walked for three hours around Manhattan and saw a lot of things and A LOT of cops. The streets are full of them! We saw everything from the GUESS and PRADA stores to Nintendo World. It was awesome. As one of my teachers said "It feels like your not even here, like a dream." That was so true, it felt exactly like a dream.

After everything we got back to our hotel, then went out for dinner, and then HIT THE HAY. We were so bloody tired. HA well time for breakfast. Oh by the way. 560 photos last night....
