Silhouette photographs can be very be very captivating and also can be very creative. A silhouette is basically your subject placed infront of something that is emitting a lot of light towards the subject and then to the camera. See example!
That is your most basic silhouette lighting set up. You can change the light source from a studio strobe to a bright window, the sun and so on. For your exposure, you basically want to expose for your background (light source)which means your background light needs to be significantly brighter then your subject because you want to your subject to be more or less black agaisnt your perfectly exposed background.
